The current Referee Coordinator is Linda Mensinger Nunez nunezfamily@verizon.net .

If you are interested in refereeing soccer games this fall (and are not currently certified to do so), it is time to sign up to attend training classes. Please note that there are two types of training classes being offered at this time, and that the term 'grade' refers to the referee certification level, not to a particular grade in school.

All referees are required to complete US Soccer Federation training, either at the Grade 9 level (which will qualify referees for recreational league games) or at the more challenging Grade 8 level (which will prepare referees to officiate at more demanding recreational and competitive soccer games). You must attend all classes for the grade level you select, and you must pass the tests given at the classes to be certified.

If you are at least 11 years old and have 2 or more years of soccer playing experience, this may be the job for you! (Adults are also welcome.) Referees need a good knowledge of the game, organizational skills and the self-confidence to relate to adult coaches. Pay starts at $10 for a U6 game and increases for older age groups and for competitive games.

Although we will have some returning referees, we will need a large number of referees to cover all of the recreational league games, as well as the smaller number of competitive games this fall. Games are normally scheduled for Saturday morning, Saturday afternoon and Sunday afternoon at various fields in East Greenwich. The number of games each person would be asked to referee varies, but in the past has been about 6 games per season. As in the past, we will try to schedule referee assignments to not conflict with any other commitments you specify.

The cost for attending the Grade 9 referee training classes is $40 and the cost for attending the Grade 8 referee training classes is $60, but the East Greenwich Soccer Association will pay the training class fees for EG residents who become certified, and plan to referee in EG. You will need to purchase your own referee shirt and equipment (such as a whistle, etc. - details will be given at the first class).

If you are interested in becoming certified to referee soccer games this fall, we encourage you to sign up and attend training classes. Go to http://www.risrc.net and click on Clinic Information at the top to see the list of training classes and to register for the session of your choice. There may be additional classes offered in the future, but at this time the grade 9 classes are being offered at the Cold Spring Center near the town beach in North Kingstown on Mondays, August 16 and 23 and there are two options for grade 8 classes (Coventry and North Smithfield). If you are not sure which classes to attend, we recommend the grade 9 classes in North Kingstown - you can always upgrade in the future after you determine that you like doing this job.
