COMPETITIVE CHARTER

For the East Greenwich Soccer Associations' Competitive Program

Organization

Competitive - Goalie's Perspective

The Competitive Soccer Committee (CSC) will oversee the Competitive Program for the East Greenwich Soccer Association (EGSA). The CSC will be comprised of up to five people; the Competitive Coordinator, the Boys' Competitive Coordinator, the Girls' Competitive Coordinator, the Director of Coaching and the Fields & Facilities Coordinator. At the EGSA's annual general meeting in January, the EGSA President will appoint for a one-year term the CSC members. The CSC will report to the EGSA board.

Goals

To foster a competitive soccer environment in East Greenwich under the banner of EGSA where the children will learn and grow as soccer players in a safe, fun, and positive environment. Maintain a process for coach selection, player selection and team formation that is fair and unbiased. Form teams with players of comparable talent playing against teams at a similar level that offer a challenging and rewarding soccer experience.

Role of the Competitive Soccer Committee

The Competitive Soccer Committee will be responsible to: Recruit, select and maintain quality competitive coaches. Promote and organize competitive tryouts. Oversee the team formation and the player selection process. Solicit and maintain coach and player evaluations. Provide supplemental competitive training for coaches and players as deemed appropriate. Coordinate licensing and continuing education opportunities with the coaches. Establish a base line curriculum for coaches in each age group. Work together with the EGSA Recreational Soccer Program to promote soccer at all ages and abilities.

Competitive Coaches

The CSC recognizes that our Coaches are the key to promoting and improving the quality of soccer in EGSA.

  • The CSC will solicit coaching applications in the spring prior to competitive tryout signups. The CSC may request additional coaching information including, but not limited to: Coaching Experience, Certifications, Licensing, Soccer Background and Prior Evaluations.
  • At least annually the CSC will request anonymous parent surveys to obtain seasonal coach evaluations.
  • The CSC will assemble a group of coaching candidates for each age group and gender prior to the spring tryouts. The CSC will select the Anchor team coach prior to the spring tryouts. (The Anchor Team is the first cut team for the age group and gender. Example U10, U12 & U14 Boy's & Girl's Anchor Teams.)

 Coach Requirements

  • All coaches will be required to pass the appropriate background checks.
  • EGSA Competitive Coaches serve on a voluntary basis and are not entitled to receive compensation for their time and services.
  • All appointed coaches are required to obtain soccer teaching/coaching certificates in accordance with Soccer Rhode Island guidelines. Additional training will be promoted and encouraged.
  • Coaches will be required to provide the CSC with seasonal player rankings to assist in future team formations.
  • Coaches are required to provide player evaluations to their players to help them identify their strengths and weaknesses and encourage guided growth as well-rounded soccer players.
  • Coaches will be required to provide age appropriate training, consistently work to develop player skills, promote the principles of Fair Play and create a team environment for learning that is fun, focused and geared toward achieving success. A base line curriculum by age group will be provided.
  • Anchor team coaches will work in cooperation with the other age group coaches to promote a consistent development and progression of the age group throughout the competitive year.
  • Anchor team coaches will be required to participate in the tournaments selected on an annual basis by the CSC to represent the EGSA competitive soccer program.

Competitive Tryouts

The CSC is responsible for promoting signups for the spring competitive tryouts to be held toward the end of the competitive spring season. These dates will be communicated via the egsasoccer.com web site and any other means necessary to ensure widespread knowledge of Tryout dates. On-line signups for the tryouts will be required.

Tryouts will be used to assist in the team formations for the upcoming year. A supplemental tryout will be held in the Fall for the U8 Winter Teams. Players not able to attend the spring tryouts will be evaluated in season by the Anchor team coach. The CSC will determine placement based on the roster availability of the appropriate level team otherwise a player can choose to be added to the waiting list.

The EGSA competitive trainers will organize and run the tryouts to help showcase the talents of the players. The competitive trainers using their knowledge from their spring training sessions and the tryouts will submit player evaluations to the CSC.

Players will be required to identify the seasons that they will be committed to playing for an EGSA competitive team and any premier club affiliation they have which could effect team rosters and divisional play.

A Player wishing to tryout with an older age group can petition the CSC for a waiver. The player will also be required to tryout with his or her own age group. The player will have to rank at the top of the older age group and will only be considered for placement on the Anchor Team. (Example a U10 Player trying out to play on the U12 Anchor Team.)

For age ranges where there are limited numbers of players, typically U14 & U16, tryouts may be waived at the discretion of the CSC.

Team Selection

Based on the number of players signed up for tryouts in each age group and using the standard age group team roster sizes the CSC will determine roughly the number of competitive teams that can be formed.

Based on the number of players and the depth of talent in each age group the CSC will determine if Age Based or Merit Based Teams are most appropriate.

The CSC will assemble a group of coaching candidates for each age group and gender prior to the spring tryouts. The CSC will select the Anchor team coach prior to the spring tryouts.

The coaches will evaluate and rank the players at the tryouts.

The CSC will assemble the coaches' tryout data, competitive trainers player evaluations, seasonal coaches rankings, and prior trout data to aid in the team formation process.

The CSC and the selected age group coaches will meet to form teams.

The age group coaches will be expected to work together to help form the teams that are best for the players and the age group. The Anchor coach will have final discretion on the player selections to be submitted to the CSC for approval.

Following the Team Selection the Coach will immediately notify the players selected for the team and require confirmation of their acceptance.

Roster changes

Only with the approval of the CSC will roster changes be permitted. Coaches shall not change team rosters.

If realignment of teams in certain age groups is required due to the maximum roster limits dictated during certain seasonal play, the CSC and the age group coaches would work together to provide the best solutions for team rosters.

Professional Trainers

The CSC may, with the EGSA board's approval, hire professional trainers for the competitive program to assist all competitive teams and their coaches with additional soccer training and development. The CSC will seek applications from potential professional trainers and will review criteria such as cost, the trainers' credentials and experience and the overall benefit coaches and players will receive from the professional services offered. The CSC will make paramount the goals of the EGSA Competitive Program when deciding on who will be hired. All contract and financial arrangements with the hired paid trainers will be handled through the CSC w/ EGSA Board Approval. Coaches requiring additional training will petition the CSC for approval.

"A" teams: U8 and U10: coaches shall use best efforts to provide equal playing time for each child. U12 and above: coaches shall have the discretion as to the amount of playing time each child receives in a given game, but the coaches shall, over the course of a season, use best efforts to provide a balanced playing experience for each child.

League Play

For the Fall and Spring seasons the CSC promotes play in the Soccer Rhode Island Super Liga. Working with the team coaches the CSC will confirm and promote play in divisions that are appropriate for the team and offer a challenging and rewarding soccer experience.

Only Anchor team coaches will be allowed to play outside of the SRI Super Liga in another SRI approved league. The Anchor team coach must petition the CSC for approval.
