EGSA Referee Training Classes

If you are at least 11 years old, have 2 or more years of soccer playing experience, and are interested in refereeing soccer games this fall (and are not currently certified to do so), please read the attached information about upcoming referee training classes.  Adult referees are also welcome!

Referees need a good knowledge of the game, organizational skills and the self-confidence to relate to adult coaches.  Pay starts at $10 for a U6 game and increases for older age groups and for competitive games.

All referees are required to complete the US Soccer Federation training to become certified, either at the beginning Grade 9 level or the more challenging Grade 8 level, which will prepare referees to officiate at SuperLiga competitive soccer games.

At this time there are two Grade 9 training classes scheduled.  (Grade 8 training classes will likely be scheduled over the winter, to prepare those interested for the spring competitive season.)  Interested candidates can attend either Grade 9 class, but must attend both sessions in whichever class is chosen, and must pass the test given at the end of the second session of the class.

Note: Grade 8 New Referee clinics require completion of an online training course prior to attending, which is expected to take 2-3 hours to complete.  As a result, registration for these classes will close two days prior to the class.  Instructions for completing the online training will be sent by email prior to the clinic.

 You can find more information about these classes via the State Referee Committee's website, at www.risrc.net, and you can pre-register for a class at GameOfficials.NET if you choose (or, you can simply show up at the class, and provide the required information).  If you decide to pre-register, please DO NOT PAY ONLINE - choose the pay at the class option instead.  The $105 fee includes the class registration (which EGSA will pay if you choose to referee for EGSA) and the cost of a uniform package offered by a new supplier (which you are not required to purchase at the class).

If you choose to purchase the uniform package, the cost of $55 includes two referee shirts (one gold, one black), one pair of referee shorts and one pair of referee socks.  You will need to purchase your own uniform, but many referees have found that a single shirt will suffice for most recreational league games, and there are some other alternatives - such as local shops, or the internet, or you may know some "retired" referees - where you may be able to purchase items at a lesser cost.

Although we will have some returning referees, we will need a large number of referees to cover all of the East Greenwich Soccer Association fall recreational league games, as well as the smaller number of competitive games this fall.  Games are normally scheduled for Saturday morning, Saturday afternoon and Sunday afternoon at various fields in East Greenwich.  The number of games each person would be asked to referee varies, but in the past has been about 6 games per season.  As in the past, we will try to schedule referee assignments to not conflict with any prior commitments you specify.
